Gurr Johns Sets Record for Iconic Irving Penn Image

Acting on behalf of a private client, Gurr Johns bid aggressively at Christie’s Paris on 12 November to acquire Irving Penn’s stunning Woman in Moroccan Palace (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn). At €361,000 ($492,273), this set a record for the image and was the second-highest price ever achieved for the artist at auction. Penn’s unerring eye has given us some of the most enduring works of twentieth-century photography, and Gurr Johns believes that Penn is worth investing in even in today’s strong market for masterpieces, particularly when the condition is outstanding and the provenance impeccable. This photograph, inscribed to a friend and immaculately preserved, certainly fit the bill.
