Rare Jiaqing Vases

Peter Lang, a newly appointed expert in Gurr Johns' New York office, was called by a member of the Peabody family to review an estate valuation carried out by another, recently established, competitor firm of appraisers. The valuation contained a pair of Chinese vases with an appraised value of only $10,000. The exceptional quality of the decoration reminded him of some of the Imperial porcelains that had been made for the Emperor Jiaqing (1760-1820). He took detailed photographs of them, and consulted Gurr Johns' oriental art specialist, who confirmed that these were indeed a pair from the period and of very high quality.

Gurr Johns' advice was to take advantage of the current strength of the market for Imperial Chinese wares and they were sold at auction in April for $1.161m.

A wonderful result for the client - who had the good sense to consult Gurr Johns' renowned experts!
